As two leading European heritage organisations, the Europeana Foundation and Europa Nostra seek to preserve, celebrate and empower the cultural heritage sector in Europe. Our work is rooted in a belief in the transformative power of cultural heritage - and the potential it holds to contribute to building a green, social and digital Europe.
This belief also underpins the EU-funded European Heritage Hub project, which is led by Europa Nostra and in which the Europeana Foundation is a proud partner alongside 18 other organisations. The European Heritage Hub builds capacity for action and advocates for the European heritage sector to support the transition towards a more sustainable, innovative and inclusive future. The Hub recently launched a compelling Call to Action to the EU, urging it to champion a socially and environmentally responsible digital transition for and with cultural heritage.
Building on this call, Harry Verwayen, General Director of the Europeana Foundation, and Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Secretary General of Europa Nostra and Project Leader of the European Heritage Hub have recently published an opinion piece in the online magazine Digital Meets Culture which highlights the myriad tangible and intangible benefits that cultural heritage brings to Europe and society. In the context of a new European Parliament and Commission, the article underscores the need to ensure that the digital transformation of the cultural heritage sector remains a key focus for investment in the coming years, and that the principles of the sector are adapted across actors and spaces.
